The term investment in investment casting force an individual to relate it to finance, but in contrast to assumption of an individual it has nothing to do with finance. Investment casting refers to the ceramic or wax materials that are used to create niche into which molten metal is poured to make the casting. Investment casting is a leading part of the foundry industry. Some 5000 years ago Egyptians used this process to make gold jewelry. Investment casting is also known as lost wax process.
Investment casting is used in production of those products, which are hard to produce through normal manufacturing, products with complex shapes and the products that have to uphold high temperature. Investment casting is also known as lost wax process. In this process molds are made using materials that can be easily melted like wax. This wax pattern is dipped into the material of which mold is to be made. The material coats around the wax and form a thin skin, which is allowed to dry, and the same process is repeated until desired thickness is achieved. The mold is allowed to cool down. It is then kept in an oven to let the wax or any other material to melt away and in this way a mold is obtained. This mold can later be filled with molten metal and product of desired shape is obtained.
Different types of materials that can be cast in investment casting are alloys of aluminum, precious metal (gold, silver and platinum), bronze, stainless steel, and tool steel.
Investment casting if used extensively can altogether sweep away machining used for some products. As it is more cost effective as compared to other casting process and cause minimal waste of material from which product is obtained. No casting process can produce a finer surface finish compared to investment casting.
Investment casting dramatically helps in weight reduction and durability of a product. When a product passes through investment casting than there is no further need for Secondary Operations.
There are some drawbacks of investment casting and they are: Metal shrinks as it cools, therefore, a casting is larger when it is hot than after it cools and investment casting is labor Intensive.
