Apparently, Malaysia was not always as advantageous to investors as it currently is. This country formerly had difficulty in maintaining long term investment interest, experiencing a major financial crisis in 1997. For this reason, a series of changes in laws and taxing strategies were implemented to discourage short term investing, while providing extra incentive to those willing to stick around. In the years since, the economy and investment opportunities have reacted favorably to these changes.
Malaysia, with a population of 25.72 million, is only slightly larger than New Mexico. However, it has increased exports and imports alike exponentially in the last few years.
The major exports from Malaysia are rubber, textiles, wood and wood products, electronic equipment, palm oil and petroleum. Each of these, along with tin are the countries greatest industries.
Machinery, equipment, chemicals and food are the primary imports into the country.
Interestingly enough, the growth of Malaysia is almost completely dependent on the export of electronics to the United States, Japan, and China. As a result the downturn of the U.S. economy in 2001 affected Malaysia very negatively. However, the GDP has rebounded with a steady increase over 4% in 2002 and 2003 and an impressive 7% in 2004.
Unfortunately, Malaysia is experiencing a few regional disputes with its surrounding countries. While this could hypothetically impact its economy negatively it does not seem to have been an issue over the last few years, with Malaysia?s financial status booming.
Although many are hesitant to invest in foreign markets, others have chosen to take the plunge and have profited greatly from it. While there are always risks involved, there is also an incredible amount of potential in international markets ? Malaysia is no exception.
