Stock Trading on the Internet

March 28, 2009 | In: Share Market

One of the many things that the internet has done for us is it has made the stock market more accessible to the general public than it has ever been before. Since the early 1990s, online stock trading has been one of the primary uses people have for the internet and even AOL offers a continuous stock ticker built in to its popular Instant Messenger software. Americans are clearly internet stock trading happy.

Internet stock trading wasn’t always this readily accepted, however. When the internet was still “new” to most people (for the record, the internet has essentially been around since the 1970s, but was not widely used by consumers until nearly twenty years later), precious few trusted the technology enough to pursue their stock trading online. In fact, it wasn’t until after the stock market dot com debacle in the late nineties that online stock trading really took off. In a bit of financial irony, the majority of dot com companies were falling apart and their stock prices were plummeting while stock trading related web sites started to flourish.

Today, of course, there are practically more ways to trade stocks online than there are stocks themselves. Every major brokerage firm offers online stock trading, as do many banks and other financial institutions. And there are literally dozens of E-trading sites competing for investors’ stock trading business. Online stock trading is now used by the serious and the casual investor alike and modern advances in internet technology – particularly with regard to security – have made online stock trading into a phenomenon that is likely to be with us forever.

Of course online stock trading is not the only way to invest in the stock market, but most investors have now embraced the technology they once shunned. The simplicity of internet stock trading and the convenience of making trades from the living room PC have made believers out of even the stodgiest investors.
