A stock exchange being a primary creator of wealth, exists in almost every country in the world. Due to the fact paced growth of globalization price movements in any of the major stock exchanges affects the lesser known exchanges. Due to the sheer size of the American economy and her well developed capital markets, the American stock exchanges exert great influence on the other stock exchanges of the world.
Major stock exchanges of the world
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)
The NYSE is amongst the world?s largest stock exchange. It has been surpassed by the Nasdaq in 1996 in terms of trading volume. Stocks of more than 2,800 companies from various parts of the world are traded on this exchange. Market capitalization on this exchange exceeds $20 trillion.
The Nasdaq
Nasdaq stands for National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations. It is the world?s first electronic stock exchange. The Nasdaq is the world?s largest stock exchange in terms of trading volume. This American exchange was established in the year 1971. Stocks of over 3,200 companies from every sector in the economy are traded on the Nasdaq.
The London Stock Exchange (LSE)
The LSE is one of the world?s oldest and largest stock exchanges. It was founded in 1801 and is located in London. Stocks of about 2,800 overseas and UK based companies are traded on this exchange.
The Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE)
The TSE was founded in 1878 and is located in Tokyo, Japan. Stocks of about 2,300 companies are traded on this exchange with a combined market capitalization of $3.3 trillion. The TSE is the most stock influential exchange in Asia.
The Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE)
The Toronto Stock Exchange too was formally founded in 1878 and is located in Toronto, Canada. It was one of the first stock exchanges in the world to adopt electronic trading practices as a replacement for floor trading. It is amongst the world?s largest exchanges in terms of trading volume and market capitalization.
The Frankfurt Stock Exchange
It is the largest amongst 8 German stock exchanges and is located in Frankfurt, Germany. Most of stocks traded here is that of German companies. It has both a floor trading system and an electronic trading system.
